You love chimpanzees because you find monkeys adorable. But watch out: Chimpanzees are not monkey; they are apes. Let’s find out the difference between monkeys and apes.

Before looking at differences, it’s important to know that apes and monkeys are both primates. There are more than 300 species of primates on Earth, including human beings. (We evolved from them, remember?)

Primates have hands, feet-that look like hand and fore facing eyes. Most primates are agile tree climbers except for humans, unless your name is Tarzan.

When it comes to apes, they are larger than monkeys and usually they have larger brains. They also live longer than monkeys.

Some of the popular apes are:

Orangutan

Chimpanzee

Mandrill (Remember Rafiki from The Lion King)

Gorilla (The King Kong)

Some of the famous monkeys are:

Gray Langur

Rhesus macaque (Indian Monkey)

Probiscis Monkey

Spider Monkey

The quickest way to tell the difference between a monkey and an ape is by the presence or absence of a tail. Almost all monkeys have tails; apes do not.

Apes are highly intelligent animals and can exhibit human-like behaviour. Orangutans and chimpanzees are even known to create simple tools to help them in their daily lives. Apes can also learn sign language to communicate.
