Chechnya is a republic in the Caucasus mountains⛰ region in south-western Russia.
It has a centuries-long conflict⚔ with Russia which is primarily because of the fact that Chechnya is an Islamic region and doesn’t get along well with Christian Russia.
In the mid-20th century, Soviet dictator Stalin accused😠 Chechens of helping Germans during World War II and sent millions of them into exile.
In Modern times
The most recent🗓 conflict between Russia and Chechnya took place in the 1990s.
In 1991, Chechnya declared independence✊ from Russia after the collapse of the U.S.S.R.
In response, Russia sent its armed forces into the region in 1994 leading to the start of the 1st Chechen War.
The intense campaign lasted for two years.
Russian troops eventually withdrew from the region under a peace accord🤝 which let Chechnya maintain its de facto independence.
Russia taking hold
In 1999, the Russian forces started an anti-terrorist👿 campaign in Chechnya to wipe out the Islamic terrorist groups based in the region.
The following year, Russia succeeded✌ in putting the region under its direct control
However, in the process, its forces almost completely destroyed😣 Chechnya’s capital city Grozny.
A Deadly Insurgency
Since the Russian 💪takeover of their territory, Chechen radical Islamists have carried out many terrorist attacks across Russia.
The most deadly among them include the Russian apartment bombings💥 in 1999, the Moscow theatre hostage crisis in 2002, the Beslan school🏫 hostage crisis in 2004 and the 2010 Moscow Metro bombings.
In response, the Russian forces hit back👊 hard by eliminating most of the insurgent leaders.
Heavy Casualties
Though it is difficult🤷♂ to ascertain exact figures of Russia-Chechnya conflict, it is estimated🤔 that the two wars resulted in the death of about 150,000 people😧.
