The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean in the world.
It occupies about a third of the globe’s surface.
Its total area is over 16 crore square kms which is more than Earth’s entire landmass of 15 crore square kms.
The Pacific Ocean extends from the Arctic region in the north to the Antarctic region in the south.
It is further subdivided by the equator into North Pacific and South Pacific waters.
It contains about 50% of the world’s oceanic water.
Pacific Ocean’s name was given by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 when he was sailing around the world.
As he met favourable winds while navigated through it, he called it Mar Pacífico, which means “peaceful sea” in both Portuguese and Spanish.
There are about 25,000 islands in the Pacific Ocean which is the highest among all the oceans.
They are divided into three main groups known as Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia.
The world’s deepest trench (a long cut in the ground) named Mariana Trench is located in the western Pacific Ocean.
It is about 2,550 kms in length and 69 km in width.
Its deepest point is 10,984 metres and is called ‘Challenger Deep.’
There is an arc-shaped 40,000 km. long area, near the coastal areas of the countries around the Pacific which has been nicknamed The Pacific Ring of Fire.
About 90% of the world’s earthquakes and 80% of the world’s largest earthquakes occur along this area.
