Have you ever heard of the term ‘galaxy’? If not then let us explain that to you. A galaxy is a group of millions and billions of stars, planets, their moons, asteroids, etc.
We are also a part of the galaxy and that galaxy is known as ‘The Milky Way’. Our planet Earth, the Sun, the Moon and all the stars that you see at night are all part of the Milky Way galaxy.
Scientists believe that the Milky Way galaxy was formed 13.5 billion years ago. That’s a very long time back. Earth is only 4.5 billion years old.
From anywhere on Earth we can see up to 10,000 stars, however, that is not a lot compared to the number of stars that are present in our galaxy.
So, while you can only see a small number of stars, we know that there are billion more stars in the milky way through the use of very advanced telescopes.
Galaxies come in many shapes and the Milky Way is spiral in shape. The neighbouring galaxy, next to The Milky Way is a galaxy called ‘Andromeda’.
