The Dalai Lama is the title given to spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism who spends his life committed to benefiting humanity.

The name is a combination of the Mongolic word “dalai” meaning “ocean” or “big” and the Tibetan word “lama” meaning “master, guru”. Put together it means “a guru who is as deep as the ocean.”

Current Dalai Lama, (religious name Tenzin Gyatso) is the 14th Dalai Lama in the line of spiritual leaders going back 700 years.

Interesting Facts

👉 Before he became the Dalai lama, his real name was Lhamo Thondup.

👉 At age 2 he was identified as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama. Young Lhamo was then renamed Tenzin Gyatso and proclaimed the 14th Dalai Lama.

👉 In 1989, the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent efforts for the freedom of Tibet and his concern for global environmental problems.
