The North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO is a military allianceđŸ€Â between the govts. of 29 North American and European countries.

It is considered to be the largest and đŸ’Șmost powerful military alliance ever formed.

Some of its key member nations include the U.S, the U.K, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Netherlands etc.

Its headquarters🏱 are in Brussels, Belgium.

History

NATO came into existence on 4th April 1949 when 12 founding members signed✍ on the treaty for its formation.

The primary reason behind the formation of NATO was the need of the leading European nations to join forcesagainst the growing threat👿 of the Soviet Union after the 2nd World War.

Another important factor was that the U.S also wanted☝ to maintain a military presence in Europe.

‘All for one’

There is a very significant clause in NATO’s charter called Article 5.

As per it, all NATO member nations are committed✊ to come to the aid of any member state if it comes under an attackđŸ’„.

Article 5 has been invoked only once, following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks✈ in the U.S.

It readily agreed to U.S. request🙏 to help it in the war in Afghanistan.

NATO actively participated in the war from 2003 to 2014.

At its peak, it deployed 130,000 troops in the country⛰.

A Peace-keeper too

In 1999, NATO got involved in Yugoslavia’s civil war when it became a genocideđŸ˜±.

It conducted a 9-day air campaign that ended the war.

Later it deployed a peace-keeping force😇 of 60,000 soldiers till 2004.
