The North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO is a military allianceđ€Â between the govts. of 29 North American and European countries.
It is considered to be the largest and đȘmost powerful military alliance ever formed.
Some of its key member nations include the U.S, the U.K, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Netherlands etc.
Its headquartersđą are in Brussels, Belgium.
History
NATO came into existence on 4th April 1949 when 12 founding members signedâ on the treaty for its formation.
The primary reason behind the formation of NATO was the need of the leading European nations to join forcesagainst the growing threatđż of the Soviet Union after the 2nd World War.
Another important factor was that the U.S also wantedâ to maintain a military presence in Europe.
âAll for oneâ
There is a very significant clause in NATOâs charter called Article 5.
As per it, all NATO member nations are committedâ to come to the aid of any member state if it comes under an attackđ„.
Article 5 has been invoked only once, following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacksâ in the U.S.
It readily agreed to U.S. requestđ to help it in the war in Afghanistan.
NATO actively participated in the war from 2003 to 2014.
At its peak, it deployed 130,000 troops in the countryâ°.
A Peace-keeper too
In 1999, NATO got involved in Yugoslaviaâs civil war when it became a genocideđ±.
It conducted a 9-day air campaign that ended the war.
Later it deployed a peace-keeping forceđ of 60,000 soldiers till 2004.
