NATO

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO is a military alliance🤝 between the govts. of 29 North American and European countries.

It is considered to be the largest and 💪most powerful military alliance ever formed.

Some of its key member nations include the U.S, the U.K, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Netherlands etc.

Its headquarters🏢 are in Brussels, Belgium.

History

NATO came into existence on 4th April 1949 when 12 founding members signed✍ on the treaty for its formation.

The primary reason behind the formation of NATO was the need of the leading European nations to join forcesagainst the growing threat👿 of the Soviet Union after the 2nd World War.

Another important factor was that the U.S also wanted☝ to maintain a military presence in Europe.

‘All for one’

There is a very significant clause in NATO’s charter called Article 5.

As per it, all NATO member nations are committed✊ to come to the aid of any member state if it comes under an attack💥.

Article 5 has been invoked only once, following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks✈ in the U.S.

It readily agreed to U.S. request🙏 to help it in the war in Afghanistan.

NATO actively participated in the war from 2003 to 2014.

At its peak, it deployed 130,000 troops in the country⛰.

A Peace-keeper too

In 1999, NATO got involved in Yugoslavia’s civil war when it became a genocide😱.

It conducted a 9-day air campaign that ended the war.

Later it deployed a peace-keeping force😇 of 60,000 soldiers till 2004.
