TheĀ North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO is a military alliancešŸ¤Ā between the govts. ofĀ 29 North American and European countries.

It is considered to beĀ the largest and šŸ’Ŗmost powerful military allianceĀ ever formed.

Some of its key member nations include theĀ U.S, the U.K, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Netherlands etc.

Its headquartersšŸ¢ are inĀ Brussels, Belgium.

History

NATO came into existence onĀ 4th April 1949 when 12 founding membersĀ signedāœ on the treaty for its formation.

TheĀ primary reasonĀ behind the formation of NATO was the need of theĀ leading European nations to join forcesagainst the growing threatšŸ‘æ ofĀ the Soviet Union after the 2nd World War.

Another important factor was thatĀ the U.SĀ also wantedā˜ to maintain aĀ military presence in Europe.

ā€˜All for one’

There is aĀ very significant clauseĀ in NATO’s charter calledĀ Article 5.

As per it,Ā all NATO member nationsĀ are committed✊ toĀ come to the aidĀ of any member state ifĀ it comes under an attackšŸ’„.

Article 5 has been invoked only once, following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks✈ in the U.S.

It readily agreed to U.S. requestšŸ™ to help it in theĀ war in Afghanistan.

NATO actively participated in the war from 2003 to 2014.

At its peak, itĀ deployed 130,000 troopsĀ in the countryā›°.

A Peace-keeper too

In 1999,Ā NATO got involved inĀ Yugoslavia’s civil warĀ when it becameĀ a genocide😱.

It conducted a 9-day air campaign thatĀ ended the war.

Later it deployedĀ a peace-keeping forcešŸ˜‡Ā of 60,000 soldiers till 2004.
