In 1947 when India was partitioned, the larger half of Punjab went to Pakistan. Later, the Indian part was further divided into three states: Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

 

 

The word “Punjab” is made up of two Persian words ‘Panj’ and ‘Aab’.Panj means five and Aab means water.

Punjab shares its capital with the state of Haryana. Chandigarh is a Union territory.

 

 

The holiest and most important pilgrimage site of Sikhism – The Golden Temple is situated in Amritsar, Punjab.

 

 

The Grand Trunk Road runs between the city of Amritsar in India and the Pakistani city of Lahore. The road runs through the international border crossing between India and Pakistan at the Pakistani village of Wagah.

 

 

Punjabis have a number of festivals including Vaisakhi (Celebrated after harvesting the wheat crop), Lohdi (Celebrated in January), Holi, Maghi, Teej, etc.
