Australia is the largest island (an island is a land mass that is surrounded by water on all sides). It is known as “Island Continent”.
The name Australia comes from the Latin word Australis which means Southern. Today the full official name of Australia is Commonwealth of Australia.
Australia is also the smallest continent in the world, covering only 3 million square miles. That’s tiny compared to Asia’s 17.2 million square miles.
Australia has only one country, which is Australia itself! It lies entirely south of the equator and is called “The Land Down Under.”
Australia touches 3 Oceans – Pacific ocean, Antarctic (Southern) ocean & Indian Ocean.
Australia has the highest number of beaches in the world and more than 80 percent of Australians live within 100 km of the coast. That’s like having a beach at less than 2 hour drive.
Kangaroos and Koalas are found only in Australia. Rather, 80% of animals found in Australia are unique to Australia i.e. they are not found anywhere else.
The only two mammals in the world that lay eggs are found in Australia, the platypus and echidna.
Cricket, Rugby, Australian football and tennis are the most popular sports of Australia.
English is the most widely spoken language in Australia.
