Antarctica is the world’s fifth-largest and southern most continent.
It is situated in the Southern Hemisphere, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean.
It covers an area of about 14.2 million sq. kms.
Most of Antarctica is a polar desert thus making it the coldest, driest, and windiest continent.
About 98% of Antarctica is covered with ice that is nearly 2 kms thick and consists of about 90% of the world’s total ice.
Although there has been no rain in Antarctica for almost 20 lakh years, yet 80% of the world freshwater reserves are stored here.
The lowest temperature ever recorded in Antarctica was −89.2 °C.
Antarctica is home to animals such as penguins, seals and tardigrades.
Antarctica is the least densely populated continent.
Only about 1,000 to 5,000 people reside throughout the year at research stations scattered across the continent.
India sent its 1st mission to Antarctica in 1981.
It established its scientific base station, Dakshin Gangotri in 1983.
