TheĀ North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO is a military allianceš¤Ā between the govts. ofĀ 29 North American and European countries.
It is considered to beĀ the largest and šŖmost powerful military allianceĀ ever formed.
Some of its key member nations include theĀ U.S, the U.K, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Netherlands etc.
Its headquartersš¢ are inĀ Brussels, Belgium.
History
NATO came into existence onĀ 4th April 1949 when 12 founding membersĀ signedā on the treaty for its formation.
TheĀ primary reasonĀ behind the formation of NATO was the need of theĀ leading European nations to join forcesagainst the growing threatšæ ofĀ the Soviet Union after the 2nd World War.
Another important factor was thatĀ the U.SĀ also wantedā to maintain aĀ military presence in Europe.

There is aĀ very significant clauseĀ in NATOās charter calledĀ Article 5.
As per it,Ā all NATO member nationsĀ are committedā toĀ come to the aidĀ of any member state ifĀ it comes under an attackš„.
Article 5 has been invokedĀ only once,Ā following theĀ Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacksā in the U.S.
It readily agreed to U.S. requestš to help it in theĀ war in Afghanistan.
NATO actively participated in the war from 2003 to 2014.
At its peak, itĀ deployed 130,000 troopsĀ in the countryā°.
A Peace-keeper too
In 1999,Ā NATO got involved inĀ Yugoslaviaās civil warĀ when it becameĀ a genocideš±.
It conducted a 9-day air campaign thatĀ ended the war.
Later it deployedĀ a peace-keeping forcešĀ of 60,000 soldiers till 2004.
