The word ’Atlantic ’ originates from the Greek mythology meaning ‘Sea of Atlas’. Atlas, according to Greek Mythology, was the titan who had to stand on the edge of the earth and carry the heavens (celestial spheres) on his shoulders as punishment from Zeus.
He fought agianst the Olympian gods for the control of the heavens. The Atlantic Ocean is believed to be the youngest of the world’s oceans.
The Atlantic Ocean is the world’s richest fishing waters and it also contains rich natural gas and oil deposits.
The island Greenland is the largest island in the world and is located in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Atlantic Ocean is almost 6.5 times the size of the United States.
The Atlantic Ocean is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world, Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System off the coast of Mexico. The largest is the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia.
The Bermuda Triangle, which is believed to be responsible for many mysterious disappearances of airplanes and ships, is located in the Atlantic Ocean.
In 1912, the Titanic sank in the Atlantic Ocean after having been called an unsinkable ship. It struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic to America.
The first ocean to be crossed by an airplane was the Atlantic Ocean. It was also the first ocean to be crossed by a ship.
