Scandinavia is a collection of three countries: Norway, Sweden, and Denmark that are positioned at the very top of the Northern area of Europe. Along with Finland and Iceland, they are called Nordic countries. Remember Thor, the hammer holding Avenger, he is a God from Nordic Mythology.
Due to their proximity to the Arctic Circle, the weather conditions here are snowy and cold.
Summer months allow the sun to shine during both the day as well as the night. However, during the winters, the sun never shines. At the very northern part of Scandinavia, it is totally dark for two months.
The western and northern Scandinavia has mountains which are among the oldest in the world. This region is named ‘Scandinavia’ after the name of this mountain range only.
Denmark is the smallest of the Scandinavian countries while Sweden is the largest. These countries are known for some of best living standards, which means high literacy, long lives and empowered women.
King Harald Gormsson is famous for ruling Denmark and then Norway between about 940 and about 986, ultimately uniting all of Scandinavia.
Like many medieval rulers, he also had a nickname: blátǫnn in Old Norse or Blåtand in Danish. It means Bluetooth. (Remember Bluetooth? The feature you use to connect your phone to the audio speakers in your car or at home. It is names after this king.)
