The name Kerala is derived from the word “Keram” which means Coconut tree in Malayalam, the regional language of Kerala. Kerala is abundant with coconut trees, so naturally it came to be called ‘Keralam’ which translates into ‘land of coconut’.

Onam is the most popular festival in Kerala. It is believed to be the National festival of Kerala. Onam is celebrated each year in the month of August-September for 10 days. This year Onam will begin from 1st of September.

Boat Races are held across the State to celebrate Onam.

Kathakali and Mohiniyattam are two of the most famous dance forms in Kerala. The makeup in Kathakali holds a lot of importance as they depict different characters.

Mohiniyattam ldepicts the story of Lord Vishnu and is quite famous in Kerala.
